Tips to Stay on Budget with your Wedding Flowers

Our Best Tips for Staying on Budget with Wedding Flowers

You have a Pinterest board full of flowers you love. Now, how do you bring those ideas together within a budget that feels comfortable?

As an Indianapolis wedding florist, we help couples work through this question all the time. Our favorite approach is to identify the designs you’re most excited about, give those moments room to shine, and be thoughtful about everything else.

From ceremony flowers that make a second appearance at your reception to knowing which details to skip, here are our best tips for making your wedding flower budget go further.

1. Plan to spend 15–20% of your wedding budget on flowers and candles

We recommend setting aside 15–20% of your overall wedding budget for florals and candles as a starting point.

For a $50,000 wedding, that means approximately $7,500–$10,000. Your guest count, number of reception tables, favorite designs, and installation needs will help determine what’s possible within that range.

This is a planning guideline, and your priorities should guide the final number. If flowers are the detail you’re most excited about, you may choose to allocate more here and simplify another part of the day.

2. Choose ceremony flowers that can move to the reception

One of our favorite ways to make your investment go further is to design ceremony arrangements with a second location in mind.

A few options we love:

  • Floral clouds or urns on pedestals: These can frame your ceremony and later make a statement near your head table, reception entrance, or dance floor.
  • A ground arch: Arrangements that curve around you during your vows can often be repositioned around a sweetheart table or at the front of a stage.
  • An illusion pillar arch: Separate floral pillars create the feeling of an arch without a connected overhead structure. Depending on their construction, they can be moved to frame another reception focal point.

The key is to plan both placements from the beginning. An arrangement designed for the ceremony won’t automatically fit every reception space.

Your florist will also need to consider the time between events, access to both locations, and the team required to move everything safely. Repurposing may involve additional labor, but it can still offer better value than creating two separate installations.

3. Choose one or two big floral moments

When we ask couples what they love about their inspiration photos, it’s often the abundant ceremony backdrop or the beautifully framed head table.

Those are the moments we recommend prioritizing.

Spreading your budget across every sign, cocktail table, doorway, and windowsill can leave very little for the designs you actually love. Giving one or two focal points a larger share of the budget allows us to create something with presence.

For example, you might choose a lush ceremony installation that moves behind your sweetheart table, then keep your guest tables simple and cohesive.

You don’t need flowers on every surface for your wedding to feel thoughtfully designed.

4. Be intentional about corsages and boutonnieres

Personal flowers are a lovely way to recognize the people closest to you. They can also become a surprisingly large part of your proposal when the list expands to extended family, ushers, readers, and other loved ones.

There’s no requirement to provide flowers for everyone with a role in your wedding.

If your ceremony flowers are a priority, consider keeping corsages and boutonnieres to a smaller group. That gives you more room to invest in the backdrop you’ll see throughout your ceremony photos and enjoy again at the reception.

We’re always happy to show you how those choices affect the overall design and budget.

5. Stay flexible about individual flower varieties

Bring us the colors, shapes, and overall feeling you love. Then let us recommend the flowers that will help achieve it.

Having flexibility around specific varieties gives your florist more options when working with availability and pricing. If one flower is especially meaningful to you, tell us. We can explore featuring it in your bouquet or another focal arrangement while using complementary flowers elsewhere.

Seasonal flowers are worth discussing, though they aren’t automatically the least expensive option. The full floral recipe, quantities, and design all matter.

6. Budget for the complete setup

Your floral proposal may include more than arrangements. Delivery, installation, candle and vessel rentals, repurposing, and end-of-night pickup all support the finished design.

Ask what’s included early so you can plan around the total investment.

Candles deserve a place in that conversation, too. A room filled with candlelight requires candles, holders, setup time, and cleanup. We love the atmosphere they create, and we’ll help you choose quantities that make sense for your space.

7. Ask your florist what they would prioritize

If a proposal comes in above your comfort zone, tell us which parts you love most and ask where we would make adjustments.

Sometimes reducing the number of arrangements is more effective than making every arrangement smaller. Other times, changing the placement or choosing a design that can be repurposed creates the room you need.

A helpful question to ask is: “If we keep this ceremony design, what would you recommend simplifying?”

That gives us a clear starting point for making thoughtful edits together.
